Mindfulness: Food And Meditation
Mindfulness is a holistic practice that can be followed often in everyday activities. Mindful eating is a way to connect with yourself. When we develop a healthy relationship with food, it nourishes and heals us better. From the choice of ingredients to cooking and having food are stages of being mindful and grateful.
Gratitude matters
Be grateful to the person who provided or cooked the food, for cooking is an act of love and kindness. An attitude of gratitude while eating mindfully brings joy with nourishment.
Food is fuel and medicine
Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. - Hippocrates
Food provides energy and nutrients. Healthy greens, protein-rich legumes, vitamins, and minerals-rich plant-based food can be most nutritious. The awareness about the food and its ingredients lets us connect with food.
Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.-Michael Pollan
Mindful eating
A short meditation; taking a moment to be grateful for food and the provider(s) before eating helps to become aware and focus. Taste is secondary, and it is unwise to connect too much with the taste of the food. And eating in moderation, and avoiding late dinner can help to sleep better.
Mindful eating alleviates stress
Stress is inevitable, and food and meditation can help manage stress and restore well-being. When I feel anxious, a diet rich in leafy greens and pulpy orange juice for a couple of days relieves stress.
Silence and observation while eating induce relaxation. As we eat mindfully, we also train our minds to be aware and live the moment. Practicing mindfulness often can reset the growth of negative emotions and dissolve anxiety and anger that contribute to stress.
